I hosted my son's rehearsal dinner at Magnolia Grill last Friday evening. First off let me say that Peggy Rice is not only as sweet as she can be but helpful and made sure that everything was perfection. I had been working with her since the 1st of the year and she was prompt with answers and pretty much had everything finalized well before the event. The ambiance in the restaurant was perfect. White linen tablecloths, candles, silver and crystal made for a very romantic setting. The service was exceptional. I believe we had 3 servers and all of them were fast, courteous and made sure everyone had what they wanted/needed. Lisa served our table and she was so sweet, especially to my 82 year old mother who was REALLY hungry! Now...the food. Good gracious! The amount you get on your plate is surreal. My ex husband ordered the stuffed flounder and it was near the size of a turducken. (Google it) I had the grilled amberjack and it was so mild, tender and moist, it was like eating butter...only with an amberjack flavor. My new in laws from Maine (who know seafood) had the blackened amberjack and RAVED about it. Everyone who attended that evening were so pleased (and full) and said they would surely visit Magnolia Grill again if their travels brought them back to Ft. Walton Beach. I grew up down there and you can bet that when I am home to visit...even if only for a weekend I am eating dinner there. And if you are reading this...so should YOU!

My family has been coming here for years. The food is always great and the service is amazing. Pay no attention to the other reviews.

The staff is rude, the food is poor. "Museum", give me a break. Also, this place is owned by right wingnuts - get this - for years they used to have a cardboard cutout of G W Bush and later Sarah Palin right by the front door! Talk about making people feel welcome. Recently they hosted a big party for the con man Scott Walker. I wouldn't make the review political, but they made the restaurant political! These people don't deserve your money, and they don't earn it either.

Don't listen to the guy complaining about the politics of the owners. My gosh, get a life. Magnolia Grill may be one of the very most charming places in the whole world. It's in a 1940s-era home -- and it must have been something in its day! -- and it is kept as a sort of museum, filled with memorabilia and one-of-a-kind photographs of old Fort Walton and the way things were back when. That may not mean much in Bugtussle, Arkansas, but this is the home of Eglin Air Force Base, of the training grounds of Col. Jimmy Doolittle and his raiders, of some of the earliest Spanish and Anglo settlement in the country and some of the earliest Indian settlement in of North America. It's not Disney World: this is "Old Florida" with capital letters. And you really feel it under the magnolia trees here in this lovely place. The food is prepared by Tom Rice, who maintains he is a "cook" not a "chef", and it is very, very good. There's a pretty wide range of seafood, steaks and Italian, and it's very much like your mother wishes she could have made. Tom, if you get to know him, will also whip up special appetizers and other dishes if you ask, stuff you'll never see on the menu. You should get to know him. (Oh yes, and to the idiot Democrat reviewer: that means you too. Tom may be an evil Republican but he also gives more food and more cash to charity than virtually anyone in the county. Didn't bother to consider that, now did you, you partisan hack?) Lunch menu is a little different, a lot cheaper, and equally good. Catch the breakfasts: they're usually for charity. And above all, just go. This is an experience, one of the things that makes our little corner of the world one of the best.

My family went here on vacation and we were all pleasantly surprised! We all ordered different types of Italian food and everything we ordered was very tasty. I love Italian food and this is one of the best places to get it! I will go back here every time I travel to Destin!

We sat on the 'porch' and enjoyed the ambience and the service, not to mention the delicious food! Delicious white fish topped with crawfish on bed of spinach and rice! yum!

Magnolia Grill is a nice Seafood, Steak, and Italian restaurant. It has a 1940s decor and a lot of history throughout the restaurant. The food is good, but I think most people go there for the atmosphere and charm.

We have eaten at the Magnolia Grill before and loved it (at lunchtime, never had dinner there). So, when we were planning our wedding in the area, I was excited to have them cater because I was pumped for the gazpacho. I regret hiring them, and they ruined the fun of our wedding for my husband. First, you don't deal with Tom, who is wonderfully nice and easy to work with. You work with Peggy, who from the get-go was rude and borderline snarky in her e-mails. Second, there was never a contract. This should have been a red flag for me, but I was kind of crazy with planning everything, that I honestly didn't notice until it was over. Third, Peggy insists not nailing down the details of the menu and so forth until two weeks before the event. THEN, she will accuse you of being difficult to get ahold of. When, in fact, I received ONE phone call from her, and responded to each e-mail sent to me in a timely fashion. Last, she will approach your groom and demand payment of the balance DURING your reception. Not before, not after, but DURING. Oh, and don't let them bring linens!! Linens for about 12 tables, of the plain white variety was $800 alone. Then, they had stuff on the tables and on the bill that I did not request from the 'optional items' of their basic party menu. The pricing was crazy. For a $2000 spread, we paid a little more than $4000. So not worth it. Mind you, the food was great, and the servers were super great. But, none of that is worth the aggravation of dealing with Peggy Rice or paying double what it's worth. HIRE WITH CAUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Adorable restaurant with great ambiance. It closes at 8pm many nights so don't show up at 7:45pm expecting a warm reception. We didn't realized they closed at 8 when we called and were given a 7:45 reservation time. It was pointed out to us several times that they closed at 8 so taking our time with the menu and forcing the kitchen staff to stay late wasn't a good idea. The food came out super fast after we ordered and once our food order was placed they didn't rush us at all, which was nice. I would say their food is italian food rather than grill food as almost every item is a pasta dish or served with pasta. Portions are gigantic and can easily be split between 2-3 people. I ordered the filet mignon as the menu described it as at least an 8oz filet. While it was huge and fed three people at my table it was definitely not filet mignon and I felt pretty cheated by ordering it but not getting it or an explanation, but still getting to pay for the cost of it. It was three large thin pieces of steak, probably a chuck served with mushrooms, pasta, and some vegetables. It was very good, but salty and just not what I ordered. The salad was very good and their side item of twice baked potato was also delicious. I tried my friends dish who ordered the scallops and they were amazing. I also tried my other friends chicken parm and it was great as well. The owners are definitely hands on as they were hanging out in the lobby towards the end of the night talking with people as they left. They are very involved in the community as well as the military. I understand the political comments below as there are trinkets and items all over the house geared towards one political party, but that is their family history and not something they push on you, but rather simply displayed.

Last night, hubby and I ate here for a Friday date night, and it was a fabulous choice! It's tough here to choose between 4 and 5 stars, but I just can't give it a full 5. The atmosphere is charming as everyone has mentioned, in a beautiful white house featuring hardwood floors, soft yellow walls, and artfully arranged antiques galore, sort of like visiting your great-grandma's, but without the funky smell. Adding to the ambiance is just-right lighting thanks to dimmed overhead lights, perfectly arranged spotlights to keep the enough light on the food, and a candle on each table. In the background, an older gentleman serenades you with an accordion--serious cool points!!! We enjoyed taking it all in while waiting for our order, and even flipping through a college yearbook from the 60s near our table. We ordered a cup of gumbo to share as an appetizer--the perfect portion to start with, because the entrees are HUGE, certainly large enough to share, although there is a $6 split fee that includes an extra salad. It was just the right temperature thoughtfully served on a larger plate for the two of us to avoid making a mess and garnished with fresh herbs. Not being from the Gulf and only having gumbo one other time in New Orleans, I don't have much to compare it with, but we both enjoyed it, and noticed that it was packed with shrimp--enough for one in each perfectly spiced spoonful. For dinner, we both ordered specials, and after small house salads, we received plates overflowing with yumminess. Hubby got shrimp alfredo with two crab cakes, which I of course had to taste! He LOVED it, and it was, indeed, fantastic. Possibly some of the best alfredo sauce I've had, flavorful and perfectly creamy--not too greasy. The crab cakes were awesome too--all crab meat fried similar to a chicken parm. I ordered the Italian trio, with cheese lasagna, spaghetti, and chicken parm. If I had to dream up the perfect lasagna, this would be it!!! Possibly more cheese and sauce than noodles, with just the right amount of browning on top, I was in heaven, but then, I am the sort of person who thinks pasta is a just a vehicle for whatever type of sauce it brings. The spaghetti and chicken parmesan were delicious as well, and also slathered in so much cheese, I'm salivating just remembering. We both had to get carry out boxes, and I can't wait to relish the second round. Lastly, when the dessert tray came around, we both ordered dessert. They offer just about everything you can think of, easily at least 10 choices, but after everything else, our expectations were high, and we were sad that we didn't spot a single sweet that looked to be homemade. Hubs got key lime pie, and I chose tiramisu. The presentation was beautifully done, with sauce swirls, whipped cream, powdered sugar, and fruit garnishes, but alas, the desserts themselves fell flat. Service was lovely, and our waitress was Lou. We noticed that all of the waitstaff really took their time to chat to with the guests, and our leading lady did a fantastic job of making us feel like old friends (even apparently going back to talk to Mr. Rice about us and then sharing his comments the next time she was back), making good recommendations and ensuring our cups didn't go empty for long. I would easily rate this place five stars, except for the big dessert disappointment and a few other things. First, the price. I'd pay so much in a heartbeat and regularly if everything was made from scratch, unique, and locally sourced. But, although the portions are large and nearly Italian perfection itself, prices still seemed a little steep for dishes I could easily prepare for myself at home (I guess that's where Mr. Rice maintains he's a cook and not a chef?). At least I can hope the enormously marked-up profits for these basics go to good causes. Also, the bread was nothing amazing, and the salads were sad indeed!-- probably iceburg from a bag, with couple of tomato chunks and croutons, and ho-hum dressing on the side. All of the entrees we spied seemed very well done, but I do wish there had been a few specialty surprises on the menu, something unique that I probably couldn't have at any big chain. The pricing is also an oddity to us considering that the restaurant location and environment itself suggest a slightly finer dining experience, but the locals came wearing t-shirts, ball caps, hoodies, and jeans even after 6pm. We were date-night dressed up, but there were a few groups that were very dressy, and it was just an odd mix of the casual diners and and the "special night" diners (some kids for prom, and what looked like a rehearsal dinner). Lastly, again for the prices and in keeping with the rest of the decor and ambiance in the evening, I was a little surprised that the glassware, dishware, and silverware weren't a bit finer. These are all just little details, but they've added up to detract a star. :)

They seem to try really hard and they are very popular with a specific crowd of local people. They do a lot of pancake breakfasts to bring their own name to the forefront with some local charities. The food reminds me of golden corral, so if you like cafeteria style food you will think it's great. Cute location. The fact that we even have to mention politics in previous reviews on this place will give you some indication of the demographics for customers but we are in a military area so being a good abiding citizen and not deviating from the norm is important here. Not my kinda place, but really good cup of gazpacho. Make sure you order more than that or it could be rumored that you took up too much space in the restaurant.

Bad. Rude. We were never welcome. Was it because we had kids. Owner knew and did nothing. Classless

Magnolia Grill is an amazing gem nestled in the jungle of fry houses and tourist traps throughout Ft. Walton Beach and Destin. We visited in August 2012 during our stay on Okaloosa Island. The service was outstanding. The food was outstanding. The historic value of the house and the contents was simply amazing. We went to Magnolia with our two boys and the wait staff was very attentive and treated us very well. Tom, the owner, stopped by our table to check-in and then when we were finished with dinner gave us a tour of the military museum on the second floor. I could have stayed in the museum for hours - reading the journals and viewing the artifacts from WW II, Korean War, Vietnam War and Desert Storm. I ordered the seafood medley and it was very fresh and cooked to perfection. The french onion soup is great. The twice baked potatoes were very satisfying. We'll definitely be back. I'd highly recommend it.

This place used to be the "go to" place for our family for over ten years. The food was wonderful and prices were fair. However, lately, we have noticed that it is a place that promotes "our rules or walk". They do not like tourists, they do not like children and their food quality is slipping to the point where our dining experience last week will be the last for this place. They are not very accomodative and when it is time close, they shuffle you out or make you so uncomfortable that you want to leave. Never again for this place.

Cute place and ok food. What they lack in quality is made up in quantity. The service was excellent and friendly. I'd go back with a group of people since it is quaint, but for me, it is nothing special (food wise). though the place is fun to walk though

We were happy from the moment we arrived at the restaurant. The ambience is warm, welcoming and romantic. The owners, Tom and Peggy, are friendly and aware of their customers' requirements for high customer service standards. Lisa, one of the wait staff, is the epitome of customer service. The variety of food choices ensures that everyone can pick something that they love. There were 10 of us and everyone enjoyed the Italian food, steaks and seafood.
